Overview

Russia, or officially the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country extending over much of northern Eurasia. Russia shares land borders with the following countries (counterclockwise from northwest to southeast): Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (via Kaliningrad Oblast), Poland (via Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and is also close to the United States (Alaska), Republic of Korea, Sweden, and Japan. It borders the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Caspian Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea.

The world's largest country spanning Eastern Europe and northern Asia as well as eleven time zones. Its territory covers nearly twice as much of the earth as that of the next largest country, Canada. Russia has the world's greatest reserves of mineral and energy resources, and is considered an energy superpower. It has the world's largest forest reserves and its lakes contain approximately one-quarter of the world's unfrozen fresh water. The country contains 23 World Heritage Sites and 40 UNESCO Biosphere reserves.

Tourism in Russia has been growing rapidly in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Most of the tourism is centered on the cities of Moscow and St.Petersburg, since these cities are the sites of some of the most famous attractions of Russia, such as the Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin in Moscow, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the State Hermitage Museum and the Church of the Savior on Blood in St.Petersburg.

Travelers are also recognizing Russia's awesome potential for mountaineering, hiking, skiing, cycling, and kayaking. But perhaps the best way to see Russia's vast wilderness is via the Trans-Siberian Railway which is an attraction of its own, being the longest possible single train journey in the world. And to add to the attraction, you will stay in the same country. The railway passes through the remote and beautiful Siberian countryside on it's way to the Pacific Ocean, a journey of seven days, eight time zones and over 9250 kilometers and travels between Moscow and Vladivostok.

Russia has an area of about 17 million square kilometers (6.5 million sq mi). But with a population density of about 22 persons per square mile (9 per sq. km.), it is sparsely populated. The Russian Federation is a diverse, multi-ethnic society, home to as many as 160 different ethnic groups and indigenous peoples. Population is most dense in European Russia, near the Ural Mountains, and in southwest Siberia. 73% of the population live in urban areas. As of the last Census, the two largest cities in Russia are Moscow (more than 10 million inhabitants) and Saint Petersburg (4.6 million). Eleven other cities have between one and two million inhabitants.

Languages: Russian is the official language, so wherever you go in Russia, you'll find someone who speaks it. Among more than 140 other languages and dialects spoken in Russia twenty-seven languages are co-official in various regions of the country. So that according to the 2002 Census, 142 million people speak Russian, followed by Tatar with 5.3 million and German with 2.9 million speakers. English is becoming a requirement in the business world, and younger people especially often know enough to communicate, but by no means is English universally understood and spoken in Russia.
Religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism are Russia’s traditional religions, deemed part of Russia's "historical heritage". Estimates of believers widely fluctuate among sources, and some reports put the number of non-believers in Russia as high as 16–48% of the population. Russian Orthodoxy is the dominant religion in Russia. 95% of the registered Orthodox parishes belong to the Russian Orthodox Church. However, the vast majority of Orthodox believers do not attend church on a regular basis. Nonetheless, the church is widely respected by both believers and nonbelievers, who see it as a symbol of Russian heritage and culture. According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 63% of respondents considered themselves Russian Orthodox, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslim and less than 1% considered themselves either Buddhist, Catholic, Protestant or Jewish. Another 12% said they believe in God, but did not practice any religion, and 16% said they are non-believers.

Tips: While tipping traditionally is frowned on in Russia (many will probably tell you otherwise), it is a recent phenomenon, emerging after the fall of communism, and few waiters think that it's up to the guest to decide how much he or she wants to tip. Should you leave more money than the exact total when paying your bill at a restaurant - particularly if it happens to be more or less like 10% above the total, which is the customary tip in Russia - it will be interpreted as a tip. If the service was particularly bad and you want to make a point, be persistent in your demands to get your change back.
Visas: Citizens of most non-CIS countries must obtain a visa prior to arriving in Russia. Travelers from Croatia and Serbia (3 months, invitation required), Israel (90 days), Montenegro (90 days), Cuba (30 days), Thailand (30 days) and Venezuela (90 days) do not need a visa. Obtaining a Russian visa is a costly, time-consuming, and often frustrating process. Most visitors should start the process at least two months in advance, but it can be done in a few weeks if you are willing to spend a extra money.

While in Russia, law requires you to carry your passport and registration card with you at all times. Police on the streets may do random passport checks so you must have your passport on you at all times. But you're not alone  this goes for Russian citizens as well.
Airports: Most flights originate and terminate from any of Moscow's three international airports. Domodedovo International Airport (DME) is the largest Russian gateway and handles hundreds of flights a day. Vnukovo International Airport (VKO) and Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) are options from the capital. The so-called "Northern Capital", or St. Petersburg, is served by Pulkovo Airport (LED). Some international service can be found in all large cities in Russia: Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport (OVB), Sochi International Airport (AER) which is located at the Black Sea coast on the Southern part of the country, Vladivostok International Airport (VVO) at the Far East.
